Types of Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss and SymptomsThere are various types of Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss however the main two types encountered by employees are: Noise Induced Hearing Loss / Industrial Deafness This is the standard sense of hearing loss employees experience when they have been exposed to prolonged and excessive noise levels. The loss of hearing can be temporary or permanent and this will depend upon the length and density of exposure. It is important to acknowledge that Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss can be caused by other factors as well as just work related exposure. For example, those who have hobbies that expose them to high levels of noise. This may include motor sports, shooting, going to nightclubs or extensive DIY etc. Permanent Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss occurs mainly when an employee spends a considerable period of time exposed to excessive noise levels. Microscopic hairs in the ears slowly loosen and become detached, causing the loss of sensation. Over a period of time, damage is caused and of course, the hairs do not grow back, causing symptoms to remain permanent Temporary Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss is usually caused by short spells of excessive noise that results in a me simplistic loss of hearing sensation for a relatively short period of time (a matter of hours / days). For example, if a person attends a loud concert, they may experience minor hearing loss for a short period of time but this hearing loss will normally be restored a short time after. Tinnitus The definition of Tinnitus, as stated in the Mirriam-Webster Medical Dictionary is: "A sensation of noise (as a ringing or roaring) that is caused by a bodily condition (as a disturbance of the auditory nerve or wax in the ear) and typically is of the subjective form which can only be heard by the one affected". Often, people relate to Tinnitus as buzzing or ringing in the ears which can sound like ringing, although there are other similar sounds that can emanate from the ear that are also symptoms. Other factors that may play a part in Tinnitus are: 1. Exposure to other excessive noise outside of the workplace; 2. Age. Our hearing naturally deteriorates as we age which can cause Deafness / Noise Induced Hearing Loss and / or Tinnitus; 3. Stress. Without realising, stress can make Tinnitus much worse than it physically is. Tinnitus can however be an initial indicator of Noise Induced Hearing Loss and/or deafness. Tinnitus can range from severe tinnitus that can be quite debilitating and permanent whilst some can experience relatively minor and intermittent Tinnitus, being only temporary in nature.
